Projects Supported by the Alexander Trust

The F. Matthias Alexander Trust
Supporting the Alexander Technique since 1991
Registered Charity No. 802856.

The purpose of the Trust is to bring to the general public, awareness and understanding of the Alexander Technique. The Trust also promotes research and study into all aspects of the Technique.

These are examples of projects supported by the Trust:

An introduction to the Alexander Technique by Dr. Wilfred Barlow showing Dr Barlow teaching.
It was produced by Linda and Paul McCartney in the early 1980s and has never previously been released.

Alexander Technique Congress DVDs
The Trust sponsored the publication of the 18-DVD set of workshops and lectures of the first International Congress of the Alexander Technique in Stony Brook, New York, in 1986.

2008 Alexander Technique Congress
The Trust partially sponsored the International Congress of the Alexander Technique in Lugano, Switzerland. The Trust also supported the publication of the Congress Papers.
The Papers were published in two volumes by STAT in 2009.

The Alexander Technique – A Scientist’s Approach CD
Chris Stevens was a teacher of the Technique for over 20 years. He researched various aspects of the human support mechanism and their relation to the Technique. This interview with Stephanie Smith was made shortly before his death and summarises his thinking on the Alexander Technique.

Introductory Alexander Technique DVD
Known as the “The Head Leads and the Body Follows” this is a professional introductory video, featuring many well-known teachers. 25 mins. DVD. Produced by Rafaele Joudry.

F. M. Alexander’s Talking Books
The Trust funded the complete and unabridged recordings of Alexander’s four books. They were read by Marjory Barlow, a niece of F. M. Alexander and produced by Trevor Allan Davies.

Constructive Conscious Control of the Individual was produced on eight cassette tapes and published by STAT Books in 2000. Not currently available.

The Expanding Self
Often referred to as the Binkley diaries this is the most extensive and vivid record of how F. M. Alexander taught. Goddard Binkley had lessons with Alexander 1951-53 and subsequently trained as a teacher.
Published by STAT Books in 1993.

Not to Do
A personal diary by Fiona Robb of her twenty-one lessons with Margaret Goldie between 1995 and 1996. Margaret Goldie was an exceptional teacher who was on Alexander’s first teacher training course in 1931-34.

Highlights from workshops, lectures and presentations at the 6th International Congress of the Alexander Technique, 1999 in Freiburg, Germany. 144 mins. DVD.

The purpose of the Trust is to bring to the general public, awareness and understanding of the Alexander Technique. The Trust also promotes research and study into all aspects of the Technique.

The Trust consists of between five and eleven trustees who normally meet three times a year in London. One of the trustees is a member of the STAT Council and provides an ongoing link to STAT. All Trustees are practising teachers of the Alexander Technique. If you would like to consider becoming a Trustee please contact us.

The original trustees of 1991 were Mrs Julia Brodie, Air Vice Marshal David Clark, Mrs Jenny Daisley, Mrs Vartoug Gulbenkian, Mr Donald Kirkley, Mr Adam Nott, Mr David Peers and Vice Admiral Sir Allan Trewby KCB.

Current Trustees
Mary Walker, David Harrowes, Peter Ribeaux, David Reed, Anna McCallion, Kamal Thapen.

The Trust produces yearly reports.

10th International Alexander Technique Congress

Presenting at the 10th International Alexander Technique Congress in Limerick, Ireland
9th – 15th August 2015

10th International AT Congress - peterribeaxPeter Ribeaux is an Alexander Technique Teacher of nearly 50 years standing and is co-director of the Centre for the Alexander Technique in London training teachers. He is chair of the STAT Moderators’ Panel and a member of the Training Course Committee.

He has worked as a university lecturer and as a consultant in personal and organisational development, stress management and back pain prevention. The Alexander Technique is the main driving force in this work.

His private practice includes people from all walks of life and he currently gives individual lessons in a medical school.

All aspects of the Technique, in particular working out what it really was that Alexander discovered, fascinate him. He loves working with others to improve their work (and his own). More recently he has enjoyed making sense of anatomy and neuroscience in relation to the Technique.

Peter dislikes giving titles to his workshops and attempts to match his offering to the needs and requests of the participants. He does this in the general context of working as much to principle as he is able, given a mild enjoyment of heresy. Hence the rather all embracing title which he will take as a licence for some enjoyable sessions of exploration and sharing of the skill of being an Alexander Teacher.
